Popular Diet Plans
The word diet doesn’t necessarily mean eating less to lose weight. Essentially, a diet refers to the group of foods you eat. It may also refer to a dietary habit, which plays an important role in an individual’s health and longetivity.
The right type of diet depends on your nutritional needs. A skinny person may require a diet that is high in protein. Most athletes (e.g, runners, swimmers) have to carbo-load a few days before their games as they need energy to burn at their event.
Types Of Diet Plans
Vegetarian. The diet plan involves the exclusion of all (vegan) or some forms of animal byproducts (dairy, meat, eggs, rennet, gelatin) from all meals. Meat may either be eliminated from the diet or substituted with vegetables. For example, burger patties can be made from soy bean curd (toekwa) or pasta meat sauces can be substituted with pesto or processed zucchini instead.
Diabetic Diet. People with diabetes mellitus are advised to go on this type of diet. The diet consists of foods that have rank low on the glycemic index (the basis for measuring blood sugar level) which include fruits and vegetables less in carbohydrates, starches, and sugar. This diet also recommends high intakes of fiber (e.g. whole wheat).
Low Fat Diet. This diet is popular among health buffs. The diet plan involves limiting one’s fat consumption by avoiding fried foods and pork dishes. The use of saturated fat and cholesterol in cooking is avoided to minimize the risk of increased blood cholesterol levels.
Dangerous Diet Plans
Crash Diet. Crash diets are fads that take the dieting world by storm. They usually involve sudden and extreme changes in one’s eating habits, and accompanied by heavy workouts. Examples of this diet list the cabbage soup and leek soup diets (as mentioned in the book French Women Don’t Get Fat) and the master cleanse, which require dieters to go on a liquid fast for two weeks.
Crash diets are popular among boxers, wrestlers, and other martial artists, who are chasing after a desired weight category for a competition. It is also popular among people in the entertainment industry. This diet type poses serious health risks due to the stress to the body brought about by the sudden change in food in take.
